Enigma Codebreaker Lived Here!

11th Mar 2013

Family home in Glanleam Road, Stanmore has a SECRET past!

With over 400 personnel based at the Stanmore Outstation of Bletchley Park codebreaking centre from November 1942, local residents welcomed many of them to their homes as part of the War Effort.

This house in Glanleam Road was no exception as owner Graham Newman discovered when there was a knock on his front door on June 6th 1994 which, coincidentally, was the 50th Anniversary of D-Day!“Can I please photograph your house as I was billeted here during the War?” was the surprising request from the man standing outside: and so the story unfolded.

This highly secure facility – as it was within an urban setting - was at Cannons Corner at the bottom of Brockley Hill and was staffed mainly by ‘Wrens’ from the WRNS;  RAF, Royal Navy and civilian personnel.  Indeed the local scandalous rumour was that the buildings whose windows were completely ‘blacked out’ housed pregnant ‘Wrens’!

At the height of their operations up to 49 Bombe machines were housed in these buildings – designed to break the complex Enigma codes that were being intercepted. One of 5 Outstations, Stanmore was built in case Bletchley Park was destroyed by enemy aircraft to ensure that codebreaking operations would be able to continue.

The house would have been a great place to be billeted at that time – a haven of relative peace in a quiet road backing onto countryside. It is still a wonderful place to live as Graham and Pauline Newman will attest – having lived there and brought up their family of four boys over the past 30 years.Built over three floors, the carriage driveway has off-street space for 4/5 cars and leads to the garage. Its impressive front entrance is flanked by Doric columns supporting the south-facing master bedroom suite balcony.

With over 3,700 sq.ft.  of accommodation, the detached house is a warm, welcoming home that offers everything to the growing family – from spacious, flexible rooms that are great for entertaining; 6 bedrooms; a good sized rear garden that is not overlooked; fantastic ‘bespoke’ kitchen; 3 modern bathrooms – with potential for more. It is priced at £1,695,000.The groundfloor rooms flow through the spacious lounge and separate dining room to the hand-built and exceptionally designed Marshall Blake kitchen with its light and airy outlook to the rear garden. A study, TV room, guest cloakroom, utility cupboard and access to the garage complete this floor’s accommodation.

Stairs to the first floor open onto a sizeable split-level landing with a master bedroom suite with ensuite bathroom; two bedrooms with a ‘Jack and Jill’ bathroom; two further bedrooms and a family bathroom.

Stanmore Underground station on the Jubilee line is two minutes’ level walk with central London 30 minutes and Canary Wharf 45 minutes away. The excellent shopping in Stanmore village is also 5 minutes’ walk – with its range of restaurants and the library – and places of worship are also very close at hand.

Local schooling – both state and independent – is excellent with, for example, North London Collegiate, Haberdashers Askes, St. Helen’s, Aldenham, St. Margaret’s  and The Purcell School of Music all within easy reach.

The motorway network via the M1 and M25 are close by – with Luton Airport a 20 minute drive.
