The Second Annual Preston Bennett Group Golf Day Raises Nearly £12,000 For Cancer Research

18th Sep 2013

With This Amount, The Sam Keen Foundation Has Now Raised In Excess Of £200,000!!

Here at the Preston Bennett Group, giving back to the community is always at the forefront of our minds. We support numerous charitable causes throughout the year, but none is closer to our hearts than that of The Sam Keen Foundation.

Sam Keen was a dear friend and colleague, who died tragically from cancer in 2011 at the tender age of 27. He fought malignant melanoma aggressively for 7 years, with dignity, great courage and a total lack of self-pity. His overriding focus throughout his long illness was to remain positive for those around him, and his greatest wish was that others would be spared the extensive suffering that he endured during his long battle with malignant melanoma.

Dedicated to his memory, the Preston Bennett Group’s Annual Golf Day is held to raise funds for melanoma research at the world-famous Royal Marsden Hospital, where Sam was treated.

Founded after Sam’s passing, The Sam Keen Foundation initially set out to raise £100,000 to fund this research. However, this target has already been surpassed, and the additional money raised to-date is currently being used to fund Research Fellow, Andrew Furness, who will focus on conducting in-depth analysis to begin the process of developing and testing new treatment drugs.

To date - and with the funds from the 2013 Golf Day - the Keen family has raised in excess of £200,000 to assist Sam’s oncologist, Professor Martin Gore - the Medical Director of The Royal Marsden - to continue his fight against this cruel disease.

A Hole In One

Despite the less than ideal weather, the 2013 Preston Bennett Group Golf Day - held on 11 September -  saw 88 golfers in 22 teams of four braving the cold to play 18 holes at the impressive Dyrham Park Country Club located in Barnet.

Following a challenging round of golf, a tasty lunch, and prize-giving, all players and sponsors - joined by Ali Keen, her daughter Sadie, and Mark Frazer - took part in a raffle and auction which saw a staggering £12,000 being raised!
