Canons Park Conservation Area
19th Jan 2012
The Canons Park Estate Conservation Area is a part of the original 400 acre estate on which the Palace of Canons was built in 1713, which was modelled on the Palace of Versailles.
Daniel Defoe in ‘A tour through England and Wales’ published in 1724, waxed lyrical about it – “The inside is as glorious as the outside. We see many palaces of sovereign princes abroad, which do not equal it.”
Its owner was the Duke of Chandos, who as James Brydges was the Paymaster General to the Forces Abroad, serving under the Duke of Marlborough. As Duke he kept a private security force of Chelsea Pensioner sergeants and appointed George Frederick Handel as his Music Master.
The Canons Drive entrance to the estate is marked by a pair of large, ornamental gate posts which are all that remains of the entrance to the original Canons Palace. The leafy and spacious residential area that we see today is also enhanced by its own private lake – The Basin- which presents opportunities for observing the abundant wildlife and its enjoying tranquillity.
So, the Canons Park Estate has an illustrious heritage, which is now full protected by its status as a Conservation Area in the London Borough of Harrow. Many of the houses within it and for sale through us today, reflect its exclusivity and value.
