Historic Bentley Priory Gets The Royal Treatment

With the help of a Spitfire and Hurricane which flew overhead, the museum - which is located in the Mansion House of Bentley Priory - was opened with great fanfare by the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.
Prince Charles - who is patron of the Bentley Priory Battle of Britain Trust - also unveiled a bust of Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding at the infamous Grade II-listed Mansion House. As Fighter Command's leader, Dowding’s strategy helped Britain defeat Germany's planes, ultimately averting Hitler's planned invasion of the British Isles.
The royal couple met with war veterans including female fighter controllers, and veterans of the air throughout the morning.
Built in the late 18th Century, Bentley Priory served as RAF Fighter Command's headquarters during World War II, and was the RAF headquarters until 2007. The site is currently undergoing restoration, and is being redeveloped into a scheme of luxury apartments and houses, the design of which are in keeping with the authentic feel of the area.
